About JoesanTrans

Why build this

Nearly every translation tool assumes you're online. But the moments you most need a translation — reading on a plane, opening a document on an internal network, travelling with bad signal — tend to be exactly the moments you aren't. We turned the order around: local capability first, network only when local can't do it.

Some trade-offs

No cloud sync.

Moving machines means export and import. Nothing uploaded means nothing to leak.

No keys in the client.

AI comes from the server. You don't need to manage keys, and you shouldn't have to.

Results are labelled.

Every sentence shows which layer produced it, including when AI was used.

Openly licensed dictionaries.

Only data with clear licences, attributed item by item inside the app.

Dictionaries and open-source licences

The offline dictionaries are built on openly licensed data including CC-CEDICT, JMdict and Wiktionary; the offline models on OPUS-MT and M2M-100. The app's About page lists exactly what you have installed, with each licence and source.

Contact

“About → Send feedback” inside the app reaches us directly, no sign-in required. You choose whether to attach the redacted diagnostic bundle.
